In an innovative effort to save the tree’s long lasting history on the downtown square, and remediate the dying tree’s hazards, Mayor Zack Tucker has decided to have the tree cut back to its trunk, and commission a Arkansas chainsaw sculptor to carve the tree into a permanent public art fixture on the sqaure.
The tree was cut back to its trunk this Wednesday, as an effort to protect patrons of the Drew County Fall Festival from falling limbs, in preparation of the Saturday, October 10th festival.
The Mayor’s office is seeking submissions for ideas of what the tree should be sculpted into until October 15th. Area residents can make submissions online by posting their ideas on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag: #SquareTreeSculpture. Residents may also call City Hall, 870-367-4400; or visit the city’s booth at the October 10th festival on the square.
