The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), in cooperation with the Southeast Arkansas Regional Solid Waste Management District and the Southeast Arkansas Education Service Cooperative, is offering two training sessions in Monticello in August. The workshops will provide free or inexpensive hands-on activities that teachers can use to help students meet many of their learning expectations.
“The Basics” features hands-on classroom activities for any discipline and grade; provides materials and resources for classroom use; and includes information to help incorporate environmental education into established lesson plans. Topics include recycling, worm composting, source reduction, pollution prevention and waste management.
“Do the Rot Thing!” explores composting and provides composting activities that can be used in the classroom. Participants will learn about the composting process and resources to help incorporate the topic into a variety of subjects. Although designed for educators teaching students in grades 9-12, the activities are easily adapted for use with younger students. Participants in this PLT-based workshop will receive a copy of the “Do the Rot Thing!” Curriculum Guide and have the option to purchase the PLT Municipal Solid Waste guide for $10 at the workshop.
The workshops will be held at the Cooperative’s offices at 1022 Scogin Dr., Monticello. “The Basics” workshop will be held Aug. 2, followed by the “Do the Rot Thing!” workshop Aug. 3. Workshops begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by 3:30 p.m.
Both include lunch and are free to teachers in the education service cooperative, but participants must register by July 20. Online registration is available at www.escweb.net/ar_esc. Use the Session ID 274524 for “The Basics” and Session ID 274522 for “Do the Rot Thing!”.
Each workshop is approved for six hours of Arkansas Department of Education professional development credit. However, the awarding of professional development is solely at the discretion of individual school districts.
Additional information concerning the workshops is available on the ADEQ website at www.adeq.state.ar.us/poa/calendar.aspx .
